The Crayon Shin-chan Tamagotchi (짱구는 못말려 다마고치) is a licensed Tamagotchi Nano model based on the manga series Crayon Shin-chan.
The model was first revealed on the official Crayon Shin-chan Korea page. It was released in Korea on December 12th, 2023 in two colors at the Daewon Media Naver Brand Store, with a third color to be available at a later date.
Background[]
Crayon Shin-chan is a comedic slice-of-life manga series created by Yoshito Usui. It debuted in August 1990 and ran until his death in September 2009. A new manga series, New Crayon Shin-chan, debuted in August 2010. The series also includes animated films, video games, and spinoffs.
The series primarily focuses on Shinnosuke "Shin" Nohara, a five-year-old boy, along with his family, neighbors, and friends. Much of the humor revolves around visual gags, Shin-chan's mischievous behavior, inappropriate language, and sexual innuendo, although some adaptions downplay it for a more family-friendly audience.
Features[]
The user is tasked with caring for a baby by feeding and playing games to make them happy. Depending on their level of care and what games are played they will evolve into other members of the Kasukabe Defence Force, with further evolutions into costumed characters if certain conditions are met.
Birth and Growth[]
After setting the clock, a cutscene will play of a baby being born at a hospital. After 24 hours, the baby will grow into a member of the Kasukabe Defence Force depending on what games were played, and how many perfect results were gained. If the right conditions are met, the character can grow into a costumed variant.
Buttons[]
There are no on-screen icons, and therefore all information is conveyed through the screen and buttons. The characters is cared for by filling their meters; they have Hungry and Happy meters, each consisting of four units, which are both empty when they are born. If either becomes empty, the character will call for attention to fill them.
If the character needs something, the user can press the C button for an animation to see what they need. If they look angry, they're hungry; if they sulk, they're unhappy. If their Hungry and Happy meters are not empty but the Happy meter is not full, the character will do a simple happy animation. If the Happy meter is completely full and the Hungry meter is not empty, the character will perform a Close Up instead.
Pressing the A button opens the main menu, with the options to feed food or to play minigames. The meal option (rice) fills one Hungry unit, and the character will refuse to eat anymore once the meter is full. The other option (snack) fills one Happy unit, and can be used even when the Happy meter is full. The A button is also used to open the lights on and off menu when the character has fallen asleep. They sleep from 10 PM to 8 AM and will turn the lights on herself when they wakes up.
Minigames[]
There are three games available, each influencing what the character will evolve into. Winning a game will raise the Happy meter by 1, while playing a perfect game will raise the Happy meter by 2.
- Buriburi Dance: Shin-chan will be shaking their butt as a part of a dance. When A or B appears on screen, the user must press the corresponding button. If the letters appear twice, the buttons must be pressed twice as well. Five successful presses is a perfect game.
- Find Shiro: The user must find Shiro the dog who is hiding in bushes. The A or B button must be pressed depending on what side of the screen Shiro appears on. Five successful presses is a perfect game.
- Action Beam: Action Mask will be preparing to shoot their action beam. The user has 15 seconds to press the A button as much as possible to charge the beam up. 15 or more button presses is a perfect game.
Toy Clutter[]
Throughout the day at regular intervals, the character will play with toys and leave a mess. The user must press the A button to clean up the mess of toys from the screen. If the user fails to clean up the mess the character will become upset. The mess can't be cleared away if they are sleeping or upset.
Daily Events[]
Throughout the day, the user can see an animation of characters from the Shin-chan series. Pressing any button will trigger the animation to end, with some showing an additional screen before closing.
Sadness[]
Severely neglecting the character, or allowing toy clutter to stay on the screen for too long, will cause the character to become sad, depicted by them crying and four sulking lines on the top right corner of the screen. The A button must be pressed twice to cheer them up. The user cannot feed or play with the character until the condition is cared for.
Departure[]
Once the player reaches the final costume change for a character, the ending sequence will play. Pressing the A and C button together will replay the beginning cutscene at the hospital and give the user a new baby to take care of.
