The Eevee x Tamagotchi (イーブイ×たまごっち) is a licensed Tamagotchi Nano model based on the Pokémon character Eevee. A promotional selling sheet with information about the release was anonymously leaked online on November 5th, 2018 [1] [2].
The Eevee Tamagotchi was officially revealed on November 21st, 2018 and was released on January 26th, 2019.
Background[]
Pokémon is a multimedia franchise developed by Game Freak and Creatures, published by Nintendo, and managed by The Pokémon Company. It is primarily known as a series is video games wherein the player must capture, train, evolve, and battle fictional creatures called Pokémon. In addition, the player is tasked with completing a collection of every Pokémon; as not every Pokémon is featured in one game, this means players must collaborate by trading between games. Each generation of games takes place in a new setting and introduces a variety of different Pokémon with new skills, types, abilities, and techniques. The franchise also includes a trading card game, an animated series, feature films, and spinoff video games based on the Pokémon universe.
Eevee, the primary character of the Eevee Tamagotchi, is a Pokémon introduced in the first generation of games. Known as the "Evolution Pokémon", Eevee's unique biology allows it to evolve into eight different evolutions (as opposed to ordinary Pokémon, which typically only evolve into one or two possible evolutions). Each of Eevee's evolutions requires a different method to obtain, and each are of a different type. Ditto, another Pokémon featured on the Eevee Tamagotchi, is known as the "Transform Pokémon" and is capable of taking the form of another Pokémon, although may sometimes miss important features, including its face.
Functions[]
After the clock is set, an egg will appear and hatch into Eevee. Eevee will evolve 72 hours from the time of its birth and has eleven possible outcomes, including its eight standard evolutions and three additional forms.
Eevee has four hunger hearts and four happiness hearts. The hunger meter empties at a rate of one heart per hour, and happiness is lost at a rate of one heart per 50 minutes. The A Button opens the food and game menu. Giving it food one time restores one hunger heart. Feeding it a snack or playing a non-perfect game restores one happy heart. Winning a perfect game fills two happy hearts. There is no upper limit on the candy it can eat, but it will always cap at four hearts.[3] The meal is a bowl of food, and the snack is Pokéblocks.
Pressing the C button will show Eevee's status. If it looks dizzy, it's hungry, and if it looks upset, it's unhappy. If both the Hungry and Happy meters are not empty, but the Happy meter is not full, Eevee will perform a smiling animation. If the Happy meter is full and the Hungry meter is not empty, Eevee will perform a Close Up.
The Poo function has been modified: Eevee instead leaves hairballs that must be brushed away. Hairballs come every 3 hours from hatch time.[3]
The A button is also used to open the lights on and off menu when Eevee has fallen asleep. Eevee sleeps at 8 PM, while the evolved forms sleep at 10 PM. All characters wake at 7 AM, and will turn the lights on themselves when they wake up.
Pressing A and C together will open the menu or turn on or off the sound. Pressing the B button will open the clock screen, and pressing A and C together will allow the user to set the time. These two functions are always available, except when Eevee has departed.
Games[]
Unlike previous releases of the Nano, the Eevee Tamagotchi has two minigames instead of one. The games are "Berry Get" and "Dance ♪".
- Berry Get: The user must catch berries falling from the top of the screen while avoiding elemental symbols of fire, water, lightning, grass, and ice. The berries and symbols fall in thee columns, and the user moves between the three with A (left) and B (right). Catching at least one berry counts as a win, and the user must catch five berries for a perfect game. Catching one of the symbols, or missing a berry when it appears, ends the game.
- Dance ♪: Eevee will dance around the screen and then present the user with the letters of buttons to press (A or B, once or twice). The user must successfully respond at least once to win the game, and five times for a perfect game.
Sulking[]
If calls to feed or brush away hairballs are ignored for too long, Eevee will sulk, represented by it making an upset expression with three lines at the top of the screen. Pressing the A button will cheer Eevee up. This action may be required to be repeated twice in order to elevate sulking.
Departure[]
If enough neglect occurs, or the user fails to cheer it up when it sulks, Eevee will run away, leaving an image of an open Poké Ball with text reading "バイバイ..." ("Bye bye...") next to it. The departure screen is the same regardless of how well the user had cared for Eevee throughout its life. Pressing the A and C buttons together will make a new egg appear.
Trivia[]
- This marks Tamagotchi's first crossover with Pokémon, and its third with Nintendo in general. The first being the appearances of Mariotchi and Waruotokotchi in 64 de Hakken! Tamagotchi Minna de Tamagotchi World, and the second being the appearance of Mametchi in Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, both of which were crossovers with Super Mario.
- This is the third licensed Tamagotchi Nano, the first two being the Pocket Usatama and the Gudetama Tamagotchi. The Eevee Tamagotchi utilizes the same 30x24 screen introduced on the Gudetama Tamagotchi.
