The Star Wars Grogu Tamagotchi is a licensed Tamagotchi Nano model based on Grogu, a character from the Star Wars television series The Mandalorian. It was announced on September 20th, 2022 and released in Japan and the United States on January 9, 2023.
Background[]
- Refer to the R2-D2 Tamagotchi article for a Background on the Star Wars franchise as a whole
The Mandalorian is a television series in Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars franchise, being its first live-action television series and fifth overall (not counting micro-series). It is the first of several Star Wars projects produced for the Disney+ streaming service, with its first season debuting alongside the service's launch on November 12th, 2019. On October 30th, 2020, a second season debuted. A third season debuted on March 1st 2023.
The Mandelorian is set five years after the events of the film Return of the Jedi, and follows Din Djarin, a bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy who plays the titular role. Initially hired by remnant Imperial forces to retrieve Grogu (nicknamed by fans as Baby Yoda or The Child prior to his official name reveal), a Force-sensitive 50-year-old infant of the same species as Yoda, Din instead finds himself being Grogu's father figure, protecting him while aiming to reunite him with his kind.
Features[]
The user is tasked with taking care of Grogu, including feeding him and playing minigames to keep him happy. Depending on his level of care and what games are played, Grogu can change into 12 different forms. Two games (Frog Catch and Get the Silver Ball) are always available to play with an additional minigame being playable depending on Grogu's current form. Throughout the day, characters from the Star Wars series will make an appearance.
Arrival and Growth[]
After setting the clock, a cutscene will play of the Mandalorian meeting Grogu for the first time. Once Grogu is on screen, how the player takes of him and what games are played will determined what form he will evolve into. After 24 hours pass, Grogu will evolve into one of nine forms. If certain conditions are met, Grogu may evolve further into a secret form after more time passes.
Buttons[]
There are no on-screen icons, and therefore all information is conveyed through the screen and buttons. Grogu is cared for by filling his meters; he has Hungry and Happy meters, each consisting of four units, which are both empty when he arrives. The Hungry meter decreases by one unit per hour, and the Happy meter decreases by one every 50 minutes. If either becomes empty, Grogu will call for attention to fill them.
The user can press the C button for an animation to see what he needs. This can only be done if there is no obstacle on the screen and Grogu is awake; otherwise, an error sound will play. A dizzy spiral signifies an empty Hungry meter, while a sulking mark signifies an empty Happy meter. Once the meters are not empty, the animation will change. If both the Hungry and Happy meters are not empty, but the Happy meter is not full, Grogu will perform a happy animation. If the Happy meter is full and the Hungry meter is not empty, Grogu will perform a Close Up.
Pressing the A button opens the main menu, with the first option for the care menu, and the second option for the minigames. In the care menu, the user can either feed Grogu squid chowder or a macron. The squid chowder option fills one Hungry unit, and the squid will jump on Grogu’s face once he is full. The macron option fills one Happy unit, and Grogu can eat one even when the Happy meter is full. The A button is also used to give Grogu a blanket when he sleeps. Grogu will wake up at 7 AM and put the blanket away himself.
Pressing A and C together will open the menu or turn on or off the sound. Pressing the B button will open the clock screen, and pressing A and C together will allow the user to set the time. These two functions are always available regardless of the Grogu's circumstances, except during the ending sequences.
Minigames[]
The Grogu Tamagotchi has a total of twelve different minigames. Two games are always available in the menu, while ten additional games are made available based on which form Grogu currently has. The special game of Grogu's current form is shown as a question mark in the menu. Minigames increase Grogu's Happy level; winning the game fills Happy by one unit, while a perfect game fills Happy by two.
The two base games that are always available are:
- Frog Catch: Grogu will be trying to catch a frog moving left and right. When the frog is the center of the screen in front of Grogu's hand, the A button must be pressed to catch it.
- Catch the Silver Ball: Grogu will be playing with a silver ball. The user must rapidly press the A button for 10 seconds for Grogu to successfully catch the ball.
The ten additional games and the forms they are exclusive to are:
- Drink! (Cup Grogu): Grogu will be drinking from a cup. The user must rapidly press the A button for 10 seconds for Grogu to take a drink from the cup.
- Call His Name! (Silver Ball Grogu): Letters spelling out Grogu's name will fall from the top of the screen. The user must fully spell out his name by moving the cursor left or right using the A and B button to catch the right letters.
- Bite the Hand! (Bag Grogu & ???): A Scout Trooper will be trying to touch Grogu. When their finger is in the center of the screen the user must press the A button to have Grogu bite it.
- Give Me Macaron (School Grogu): Grogu has been denied a macaron and must use the force to get it. The user must rapidly press the A button for 10 seconds for Grogu to successfully snatch a macaron for himself.
- Run from the Bounty Hunter! (Necklace Grogu): A bounty hunter has captured Grogu and the user must rapidly press the A button for 10 seconds to successfully call the Mandalorian to rescue him.
- Save the Pram from Mamacore! (Grogu Pram): Mamacore has eaten Grogu's pram with Grogu in it. The Mandalorian will come to the rescue and the user must press the A and Button to move them left and right to dodge weapons falling from above.
- Red Wire! (Razor Crest Grogu): Grogu will be trying to cut wires. A or B will be displayed above him and the user must press the corresponding button in time for him to cut the wire.
- Which Pot? (Pot Grogu): Grogu will be hiding in one of two pots on screen. The user must guess which one he is hiding in by pressing A to select the left pot or B to select the right pot.
- Crack the Spider Egg (Spider Egg Grogu): Grogu will be trying to crack a spider egg. The user must rapidly press the A button for 10 seconds for Grogu to successfully crack it.
- The Mudhorn (Force Grogu): Grogu will be trying to use the force to make a mudhorn float. The user has 10 seconds to rapidly press the A button to have Grogu successfully make it float.
- After making the Mudhorn float, Grogu will take a nap for 3 minutes. During this time, button presses will not do anything until he wakes up.
Obstacles[]
Throughout the day at regular intervals, a dark trooper (or spider if the player currently has Spider Egg Grogu) will appear on screen. Pressing the A button will send them away. If the user does not send them away, they will gradually take up the screen. If the dark trooper or spider is allowed to completely occupy the screen or continuously take over the screen, they will kidnap Grogu and the user will be forced to restart.
Daily Events[]
Special animations play at specified hours throughout the day, each showing various Mandalorian characters. These animations will stay on screen for three minutes before disappearing on their own. Pressing any button will end the animation, but in some cases may trigger an additional animation to play.
Ending Sequences[]
Grogu does not die; instead, he will leave on his own 72 hours after he arrives, and which ending screen is achieved is determined by how well he's cared for.
- Farewell: If Grogu is properly cared for, he will leave on his own to go on an adventure after 72 hours.
- Kidnapping: If the Dark Trooper or Spider is allowed to take up the screen or continuously take up the screen, Grogu will be kidnapped by them.
In both cases, pressing A and C together will start the cycle over and let the user raise Grogu again.
