The Harry Potter Tamagotchi (ハリー・ポッター たまごっち) is a licensed Tamagotchi Nano model based on the Wizarding World franchise, which includes the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises. It was announced on April 25th, 2023 and released globally on July 17, 2023.
Background[]
Wizarding World is a multimedia fantasy franchise centered around the universe featured in the Harry Potter series of novels written by J. K. Rowling. The stories focus on a young boy named Harry Potter who, after discovering his wizard heritage, is enrolled into a magic school called Hogwarts. There, he makes friends, learns magic, and eventually is forced to confront the evil Lord Voldemort, who wants to take over both the magical and non-magical worlds.
Following the books' success, they were adapted into a series of feature films distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, as well as a sequel stage play. A second trilogy of films, Fantastic Beasts, was also produced, focusing on a caretaker of magical creatures named Newt Scamander who becomes entwined in a war between wizard factions.
The Harry Potter Tamagotchi focuses on raising magical creatures featured in both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises.
Functions[]
Hatching and Growth[]
After setting the clock, the user will be given a choice to raise magical creatures either from the Harry Potter series or the Fantastic Beasts series. A different opening sequence will play out depending on the user's choice, but in both cases, the user will be tasked with providing care for three hours before the user's magical creature appears. Which creature is obtained is determined by care quality, what games are played, and how many perfect games are played. During this period, the creature will not go to sleep, require brushing, or get sick.
Harry Potter Mode[]
If the user chooses "Harry Potter", the device will begin with an image of Hogwarts Castle, and the user plays the role of a student studying magical creatures. The "Care" menu is replaced with "Lesson"; the "meal" option is replaced by a writing quill ("learn"), and will show notes being written in a book, while the "pet" option is replaced by a book ("read"), and will show pages being turned in a book. There are 11 possible creatures that can appear after the three-hour period is over.
Fantastic Beasts Mode[]
If the user chooses "Fantastic Beasts", it will show Newt's briefcase be delivered by an owl. Inside is a magical creature, with only its eyes visible during certain animations. The user is tasked with caring for the creature to coax it out of the briefcase. The Care menu remains the same, but the "pet" is replaced with feeding a piece of candy. There are 14 possible creatures that can appear after the three-hour period is over.
Buttons[]
There are no on-screen icons, and therefore all information is conveyed through the screen and buttons. The creature is cared for by filling its meters; it has Hungry and Happy meters, each consisting of four units, which are both empty when the device begins. If either becomes empty, it will call for attention to fill them.
If the creature needs something, the user can press the C button for an animation to see what it needs. A dizzy spiral signifies an empty Hungry meter, while a sulking mark signify an empty Happy meter. If both the Hungry and Happy meters are not empty, but the Happy meter is not full, the creature will perform a happy animation. If the Happy meter is full and the Hungry meter is not empty, the creature will perform a Close Up.
Pressing the A button opens the main menu, with the options to provide care or to play the games. The "Care" options allow the user to either feed a meal or pet the creature. The meal option (depicted as a bowl of food) fills one Hungry unit, and will refuse to eat anymore once the meter is full. The petting option (depicted as a heart) fills one Happy unit, and the creature can be pet even when the Happy meter is full. The A button is also used to open the lights on and off menu when the creature has fallen asleep.
Pressing A and C together will open the menu or turn on or off the sound. Pressing the B button will open the clock screen, and pressing A and C together will allow the user to set the time. These two functions are always available regardless of the creature's circumstances, except for the ending sequence.
Minigames[]
There are four games, each influencing what creatures the user can obtain. Games increase the Happy level; winning the game fills Happy by one unit, while a perfect game fills Happy by two.
- Catch Gold: The user controls a platform at the bottom of the screen, moving it left with the A button or right with the B button. The user must catch gold coins bars falling from the top of the screen, and must move their catcher directly under the object before it reaches the bottom of the screen. The user must catch 10 for a perfect game.
- Delivery of Letter: Hedwig the owl will appear flying on the screen. The user must rapidly press the A button as many times as they can within 10 seconds to successfully deliver the letter. Pressing A 15 times or more (a perfect game) and Hedwig will return with a Firebolt, 10-14 times and Hedwig will return with a letter, and 9 times or less and Hedwig returns with a howler.
- Fly Hippogriff: Buckbeak the hippogriff will appear trying to fly. He will appear flapping his wings, and the user must press either A or B when the exclamation mark (!) appears at the top left corner. Buckbeak's flying can have up to five frames of animation, and the exclamation mark will appear either on the third, fourth, or fifth frame. The game lasts five rounds; the user must respond successfully once to win the game, and five times for a perfect game.
- Picking a Lock!: Pickett the Bowtruckle will appear inside a cell trying to pick a lock. As he does so, the user will be prompted to press either the A or B button, once or twice. The game lasts five rounds; the user must respond successfully once to win the game, and five times for a perfect game.
Brushing[]
Throughout the day, depending on which creature is raised either dust, hairballs, or feathers will accumulate on the screen. Pressing the A button will brush the creature, removing the waste. If left for too long, the creature may develop more waste. When waste is on the screen, cleaning it takes priority over all other functions; therefore, the creature cannot be fed, played with, or cheered up until the waste is cleaned away. Waste cannot be cleaned when the creature is asleep, and the user cannot user the C "check status" option until the waste is cleared.
Sickness[]
Severely neglecting a creature will cause it to get sick, indicated by it looking upset and a sulking mark appearing at the top left of the screen. The player must press A twice to heal creature. The user will not be able to feed or play with the creature until it is healed, and they can be treated while asleep.
Departure[]
After three days (72 hours) of providing good care, the user will be prompted to either release the creature or continue raising it. If the user chooses to keep it, the device will ask again in another three days. If the user chooses to release it, the creature will depart and leave a "thank you" letter. From there, the user can start over again by pressing the A and C buttons together.
