The Hexagontchi (ヘキサゴンっち Hekisagontchi) is an alternate version of the Tamagotchi Plus Color. Released by Bandai in July 2009, it has some different features such as new room backgrounds, items, and mini-games primarily themed around intelligence or hexagons.

It is based on a family-friendly Japanese quiz show named Quiz! Hexagon II クイズ!ヘキサゴンII Kuizu! Hekisagon Tsū, which ran from 2005 to 2011.

The side of the Hexagontchi's packaging has a small blurb promoting the show.

Design[]

The Hexagontchi is identical in physical build to the Plus Color. It comes in two shell designs: A red shell with white oval around the screen, and a white shell with a red oval around the screen.

Both designs have three light yellow buttons, a black infrared port, and Hexagon mascot Hexa-kun printed above the screen. The mascots on the Hexagontchi and its packaging also appear on a Nintendo DS game based on the game show.

Gameplay[]

The Hexagontchi is more text-heavy than most other Tamagotchis as there is importance in answering quizzes. The happiness meter is replaced with an intelligence meter, although it essentially functions the same. The happiness icons from the Plus Color are also replaced with intelligence icons, which spell out the word "HEXAGON" in English when all 7 are obtained.

In order to earn the intelligence icons on this version, the player must correctly answer questions under various circumstances, most of them found by meeting Shinsuketchi.

The default meals and snacks differ from the original Plus Color. Sushi roll replaces onigiri, "bread that makes you smarter" replaces sandwich, and natto replaces oden. Under the snacks, cherry replaces banana, crepe replaces gum, and wine replaces sake. If a Tamagotchi younger than an adult is given the wine, it will refuse to consume it.

Mini-Games[]

The Hexagontchi features four mini-games. The first three are based on games from the original Plus Color. Winning a game will earn 100 Gotchi Points.

  • Select Hexagon - Replaces the "Apples" game. Sets of three Katakana symbols will fall from the top of the screen, and the player must catch the correct symbols to spell out the word "Hexagon". To win, the player must spell Hexagon three times in a row.
  • Flip Over 15! - Replaces the "Cards" game. The player will be shown a set of cards numbered 1-14 as well as a Grim Gotchi card before they are turned over. The player must match pairs of cards that add up to 15 while avoiding the Grim Gotchi card.
  • Wrong Balloons - Replaces the "Archery" game. Three balloons in red, yellow, and blue appear on the side of the screen labelled with color names, and the player must shoot the balloon labelled with an incorrect color. They must also avoid the skull balloon floating up and down.
  • Hexagon Mini-Drills - In this game, a question from the Tamagotchi character's drill book will be displayed on screen. The player must select the correct answer before the time is up.

Locations[]

Most of the locations on the Hexagontchi are the same as on the Plus Color, with the exception of two new ones that serve the same basic purpose as the original locations.

  • Hexagon Studio - Replaces the Playground. Here, the player's Tamagotchi can meet and talk to other characters. Sometimes they will play such as by dancing under spotlights or recording each other with video cameras.
  • Live Stage - Replaces Celebria. The Tamagotchi will dance on stage with two other characters.

Intelligence icons[]

Questions will appear by chance when the Tamagotchi performs one of these actions. When a question is asked, the player must answer it correctly in order to earn the corresponding intelligence icon. If answered incorrectly, the player may repeat the action until they encounter a question again.

  • H - Eat a fortune cookie obtained from the temple. Sometimes a fortune with a question will be inside.
  • E - Use the Hexagon album. Instead of music playing, sometimes a question will be asked.
  • X - Use the paper plane item. Instead of the regular animation, the Tamagotchi may throw the paper plane outdoors and Shinsuketchi will appear riding on it.
  • A - Use the TV. The Hexagon quiz show will play, and the on-screen Shinsuketchi may have a question for the player's Tamagotchi.
  • G - Visit Hexagon Studio. The player might meet Shinsuketchi with a question ready.
  • O - Visit the Live Stage. Sometimes Shinsuketchi will appear after the Tamagotchi finishes dancing.
  • N - Plant the hexagon seed obtained by password.

Questions are asked in the Hexagon Mini-drill game, or when Shinsuketchi visits the Tamagotchi. The questions are multiple choice, with the player being able to select from four answers. There are over 100 questions included in the device.
