The Jurassic World Tamagotchi is a licensed Tamagotchi Nano model based on the Jurassic Park film series from Universal Pictures. It was announced on April 16, 2022 and was released in Japan on July 23, 2022.
In the USA, it was distributed exclusively at San Diego Comic Con from July 21 through July 24, 2022 as a convention exclusive release. It was later released in the United Kingdom and Korea on September 2022. It had an official USA release in February 2023, rebranded to celebrate Jurassic Park's 30th Anniversary.
Background[]
Jurassic Park is a trilogy of science fiction movies where the premise is humans struggling to survive after an attempt of cloning dinosaurs to create an amusement park goes wrong. The dangerous dinosaurs escape their confinements and wreak havoc on people in the park as they try to escape. Various antagonists that want to use the dinosaurs for selfish purposes also appear through the movies. A second trilogy of movies, called Jurassic World, was also released with the similar premise of the previous movies. On the Jurassic World Tamagotchi, the user raises dinosaurs featured in the movies.
Features[]
Birth and Growth[]
After the user sets the clock, a scene will play of DNA being extracted from a mosquito trapped in a piece of amber to create a dinosaur egg. The egg will then hatch into a carnivorous or herbivorous baby dinosaur and the user will be tasked with taking care of it. When certain conditions are met, the baby dinosaur will evolve into an adult dinosaur. What species they evolve into is dependent on the baby dinosaur's diet, the quality of care they were given, and how much of a certain game was played.
Buttons[]
There are no on-screen icons, and therefore all information is conveyed through the screen and buttons. The dinosaur is cared for by filling its meters; they have Hungry and Happy meters, each consisting of four units, which are both empty at the start. The Hungry meter decreases by one unit per hour, and the Happy meter decreases by one every 50 minutes. If either becomes empty, the character will call for attention to fill them.
The user can press the C button for an animation to see what it needs. A dizzy spiral signifies an empty Hungry meter, while a screw icon signifies an empty Happy meter. If both the Hungry and Happy meters are not empty, but the Happy meter is not full, the dinosaur will perform a happy animation. If the Happy meter is full and the Hungry meter is not empty, the dinosaur will perform a Close Up.
Pressing the A button opens the main menu, with the first option for the food menu, and the second option for the games. The meal option fills one Hungry unit, and the dinosaur will refuse to eat anymore once the meter is full. The snack fills one Happy unit, and can be fed even when the Happy meter is full. The A button is also used to turn the lights on and off when the dinosaur has fallen asleep. The characters sleep at 10 PM and wake at 7 AM, and will turn the lights on themselves when they wake up.
Pressing A and C together will open the menu or turn on or off the sound. Pressing the B button will open the clock screen, and pressing A and C together will allow the user to set the time. These two functions are always available regardless of the dinosaur's circumstances, except when it has departed.
Games[]
There are three games, each influencing what dinosaur species the baby dinosaur will grow into. Games increase the Happy level; winning the game fills Happy by one unit, while a perfect game fills Happy by two.
- Which One?: A dinosaur will be hiding in one of two eggs on the screen. The user must guess which egg the dinosaur is hiding in by pressing A for the left egg or B for the right. Finding the dinosaur 5 times is a perfect game.
- Escape!: A human will be running from a T-rex dinosaur and the user must rapidly press the A button as much as they can for for 8 seconds. If the A button is pressed enough, the human will successfully escape the T-rex. Otherwise, the dinosaur will attack them instead.
- Catch Food: The user controls a Mosasaurus as they eat sharks passing by from the left side of the screen. The user must press the A to go up or B to go down to catch the sharks. Eating 10 sharks is a perfect game.
Poop[]
Throughout the day, the dinosaur will leave poo on the screen. Pressing the A button will clean the poop away. If the user does not clean it up right away, more poop may gradually appear.
Sickness[]
If the user fails to fill the Hungry and Happy meters, or allows poop to accumulate on the screen, the dinosaur will become sick, depicted by it looking away and a skull icon at the top left corner of the screen. Pressing the A button twice will heal them. The user will not be able to feed or play with the dinosaur until it is healed, and can't be treated when the dinosaur is asleep.
Daily Events[]
Throughout the day, special events depicting scenes from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies will occur. The scene will play out for 3 minutes or until the user presses the A or C buttons.
Departure[]
If enough neglect occurs or the user fails to heal them when they're sick, the dinosaur will run away and leave a trail of sparkles. The dinosaur will also leave on their own after 3 days if the user continues good care of them. In both instances, pressing the A and C buttons will bring a new baby dinosaur, starting the cycle over.
