Synopsis[]
One day, mermaid Lovelin sees pirate Mametchi's crew and her heart beats faster. For the sake of fulfilling her wish "I want to see him again...", she decides to go search for the legendary Marine Blue...[1]
Plot[]
Mermaid Lovelin and her fish companion, Hapihapitchi, are swimming beneath the sea one night. They hear explosions above the surface, and Lovelin, curious, eagerly swims up to find out what's going on. They discover a battle taking place between Captain Mametchi's and Captain KuroMametchi's pirate ships. KuroMametchi ends up retreating, and Lovelin gazes at Mametchi's ship in wonder. She asks who it is, and Hapihapitchi informs her that it is the pirate Mametchi's crew. Lovelin continues to gaze and blush, causing Hapihapitchi to be confused.
Later, Lovelin is seen asking her parents if she can go to the surface. They tell her that she can't, because mermaids can't thrive away from the ocean. Lovelin is upset, and reveals to Hapihapitchi that she wishes to see "him" again. Hapihapitchi advises her to go to the fortune-teller for a solution. The fortune-teller's ball reveals a blue gem called the Marine Blue, and she says it might be able to make Lovelin's wish come true. Lovelin and Hapihapitchi search for it to no avail, and eventually get chased by a giant octopus (played by Octodogtchi). They manage to escape by hiding in a sunken ship, and Hapihapitchi suggests that they should give up on finding the Marine Blue. They are soon distracted by pieces of a ship sinking into the ocean.
On the ocean's surface, Queen Makiko's ship has been blown up by Captain KuroMametchi. She is standing on the gradually sinking remains with her crewmates Memetchi and Violetchi. Makiko is convinced that her ship won't sink because she is too great, but then Violetchi pulls out a flower behind her back. It is a marigold and she tells Makiko that it means hopelessness/despair. Makiko shrieks and rips the flower to shreds before throwing it into the ocean. Violetchi mentions that there's a ship graveyard around where they're sinking. Makiko begins to admit the severity of the situation and pulls a shell container out of her pocket. Inside is the Marine Blue.
Lovelin and Hapihapitchi rise above the water's surface to ask for the Marine Blue. By the point, the remains of the ship are almost completely sunken. Makiko refuses to give her the Marine Blue and threatens her, but is interrupted by a giant shadow looming above her. It is the same large octopus that chased Lovelin earlier. It crushes the section of the ship Makiko and her crew were standing on, and they fall into the water.
Lovelin calls over to the octopus and starts to lead it under the sea. It keeps chasing her until she leads it through the window of a shipwreck, causing it to become trapped.
Makiko and her crew are holding onto a plank of wood, but are still feeling hopeless. Violetchi holds a sweetpea flower and says that it means goodbye. Then, mermaid Lovelin comes back to help them and they all cheer. She guides them to land and they give her the Marine Blue in return for rescuing them. Lovelin tells the Marine Blue her wish, and it glows brightly.
Later, Captain Mametchi and his crew are eating and drinking, celebrating a successful day. Mametchi suddenly hears a mysterious voice singing. Lovelin walks into view whilst quietly singing Lovely Day, and she now has legs and is using a dark blue cloak to hide most of her body. Hapihapitchi looks like her usual self and is no longer a fish. Mametchi is hostile at first and asks what she is doing there. She explains that she came for her "beloved" and wants to spend the her life sailing the seven seas with him. Mametchi believes it is a love confession, so when Lovelin asks if it would be okay for them to be together, he accepts. Lovelin is thrilled, and runs forward. Captain Mametchi has his arms open for an embrace, but Lovelin runs right past him and boards his ship. It turns out that the "beloved" Lovelin was referring to was actually Mametchi's ship. She tells it that she is happy to sail the ocean together and it blushes. She then throws off her cloak to reveal a captain outfit underneath. To Mametchi's dismay, his crew are delighted to have a new captain, as they chant "Captain Lovelin!".
Lovelin is then seen commanding the ship, and everyone is happy except for former-Captain Mametchi. Makiko, Memetchi, and Violetchi have joined the crew as well, which displeases Mametchi because they used to be rivals. The final shot shows the ship sailing into the sunlight as Lovelin points her sword onward.
