The Santaclautchi no Tamagotchi (サンタクロっちのたまごっち Santaclautch no Tamagotch), more commonly referred to as the Santagotchi or Santaclautchi, is a Santa Claus and Christmas-themed Tamagotchi that was released in Japan in November 1998, making it the final Tamagotchi toy released prior to the 2004 relaunch.

Design[]

The Santaclautchi no Tamagotchi has the same body design as the standard Tamagotchi. However, as with many later models, the crack pattern around the screen is mirrored.

Backstory[]

Prior to visiting The Earth, Tamagotchis did not celebrate Christmas. However, Tamagotchis returning home had learned about the Earth's Christmas tradition, and believed that Santa Claus was real.

Living in the north was a Mayor who watched over a small village. He realized that the young Tamagotchi were now celebrating Christmas and were expecting to see Santa Claus.

Wanting them not to be disappointed, he decided to take up the role of Santa himself. This triggered him to evolve immediately into a naked Santaclautchi and began to prepare himself for Christmas.

Function[]

Hatching and Lifespan[]

After the calendar and clock are set, Santaclautchi will emerge from his cabin in five minutes. The user will be tasked with caring for Santaclautchi's daily needs, as well as providing items that cause him to transform and perform better as "Santa Claus". The user has two weeks to fill the "Distance" meter to reach the other Tamagotchi characters and give presents.

Unlike other vintage Tamagotchi devices, Santaclautchi will not die; instead, he will stay perpetually so long as he's cared for. If he's severely neglected and runs away, he will return to his cabin, starting the cycle over.

Clock and Calendar[]

In addition to the standard clock, the Santaclautchi also features a calendar that must be set before Santa can arrive. The first option is month, and changed with the A button, while the second option is day, and changed with the B button. Like the clock, pressing the C button confirms the date selection.

By default, the Santaclautchi uses the standard 12-hour clock format. Once the clock has been set, the device can be set to 24-hour hour format by going to the clock screen and pressing the A button; the AM/PM on the bottom left will disappear to show the change. Pressing A again will return to the 12-hour format.

Santaclautchi wakes at 8 AM and sleeps at 9 PM. As there is no light function, he will turn the lights off himself and will be seen sleeping in a tent.

Health Meter[]

The Health meter is the first icon and broken up into two different options.

The first option, "Status", shows Santaclautchi's current age and weight, followed by Hungry, Happy, Santa-ness, and Distance. Pressing the B button advances the menu, while the A button goes to the previous screen. Both age and weight start off at 100.

The second option, "Stock", shows Santaclautch's current food stock. Santaclautchi can hold four meals and four snacks at a time.

Santa-ness[]

Represented by four bells, Santa-ness (サンタらしさ Santarashisa) describes how close to Santa Claus the Santaclautchi currently is. Each bell lights up if Santaclautchi gets the four correct evolutions (Hat Santaclautchi, Classic Santaclautchi, Sleigh Santaclautchi, and sleigh partner Rednosetchi). The four evolutions can be obtained in any order. Once the Santa-ness meter is completely full, two secret transformation items can rarely appear in the Chimney Game, and the user will be able to change Santaclautchi into any of his forms without impacting the Santa-ness.

Distance[]

A "Distance" meter in the Check Meter option shows how far Santaclautchi is away from the other Tamagotchi characters. Getting Santaclautchi's correct evolutions will trigger the bar to fill up faster, while incorrect ones will give little to no changes in speed. The meter will go up roughly once per day.

Food Stock[]

The Food function is the second icon, represented by a picnic basket. The meal is a meat pie, and the snack is a slice of cake. Unlike other devices; Santaclautchi can only be directly fed these foods once the Hungry or Happy meter is empty; otherwise, selecting the food option will add it to his food stock, which can be viewed in the Health Meter. When either the Hungry or Happy meter empty, Santaclautchi will consume food from his stock to fill them on his own. If either the Hungry or Happy meter empty, and there is no food in the inventory left, Santaclautchi will call the user to feed him.

Chimney Game[]

The game is the third icon, represented by a stocking. The game has one round. The user must select one of three chimneys for Santaclautchi to go down. When he does, he will either find a sleeping Tamagotchi (considered a win) or get covered in soot (lose). Every two games will reduce his weight by 1, and winning will increase the Happy meter by 1.

Starting from the third day, if the Advent Calender had been opened each day, a chimney may sometimes give evolution items. Like with finding the sleeping Tamagotchi, this is considered a win, and the item will be added to the inventory. Starting from the eighth day, the reindeer egg can also be obtained. Once the Santa-ness meter is full, there will also be a chance of finding the two secret evolution items.

Evolution Items[]

Rather than the Tamagotchi evolving over time, the Santaclautchi used different items to transform into different forms. These items are stored under the inventory icon, the fourth icon on the menu and represented by a Santa silhouette with a hat and sack. There are six possible items, and the inventory can hold seven of each. An item that has never been obtained is represented by a black box with a white question mark.

Santaclautchi can use these items to transform into different forms. Apart from the two secret items, each of the three main items has three possible transformations. What transformation Santaclautchi gets is dependent on how often the user calls Super Kuchipatchi, with the transformation advancing Santa-ness more likely happening if the user is attentive to Super Kuchipatchi calls. Once used, the item is consumed. One item can be obtained from the daily advent calendar, while additional items can rarely be won from the Chimney Game.

Occasionally, Santaclautchi will get upset and begin to sulk, facing away from the screen. Selecting the item icon will give him a letter from a fan, cheering him up. Failing to respond in time will make Santaclautchi return to his cabin.

Super Kuchipatchi[]

Super Kuchipatchi is the fifth icon, represented by a cape with the letter "S" on it. Throughout the day, Santaclautchi may feel selfish and run away, disappearing from the screen at random times. This can occur 0-3 times a day. The user can use this icon to summon Super Kuchipatchi, who will fly through the screen and bring Santaclautchi back. Failing to respond in time will make Santaclautchi return to his cabin. This will occur less often as the Santa-ness meter is filled.

Bringing Santaclautchi back whenever he runs away fills up an invisible meter which affects what transformation Santaclautchi will get when he uses a transformation item. The transformations are divided into three tiers, with the third tier being the transformation that advances the Santa-ness meter. The meter can be numbered as (-1, -2, -3, 1, 2, 3, 4) and the tiers as follow are:

  • Tier One: Where Santaclautchi starts (1)
  • Tier Two: (2,3)
  • Tier Three: (4)

Answering a call moves the meter up by one step and missing a call moves the meter down by one. Santaclautchi begins on the first tier and can move up by answering Super Kuchipatchi calls; alternatively, missing calls may move him down a tier and it will take more calls to go back up. It is possible to go in the negatives of the meter by consistently missing many calls; Santaclautchi will stay at tier one, but it will take many calls to move back up to higher tiers. It is also possible to build up a buffer in tier 3, so Santaclautchi can miss more calls without moving down a tier.

Advent Calendar[]

The Advent Calendar is the sixth icon, indicated by a Christmas tree. When used, it will show a window on the left, and the current month and day on the right. Once a day, the window can be opened and receive one of the four standard items. The first three days will grant the three standard transformation items, while the eighth day will grant the egg to hatch a reindeer companion.

Tamagotchi Monitor[]

The Tamagotchi Monitor is the seventh icon, indicated by a television screen. This icon shows a Tamagotchi waiting for Santaclautchi. As it gets closer to Christmas, the Tamagotchi will grow up and its decoration will change, starting from a wreath and eventually showing a Christmas tree. If the user is too late to prepare Santaclautchi, it will show Oyajitchi knocking the tree over.

Attention[]

The Attention function is the eighth icon and is represented by a bell with a bow on top. This icon cannot be selected. When either of Santaclautchi’s Hungry or Happy meters empty, or if he attempts to run away, he will call for attention, triggering the icon to light up. The icon will turn off once Santaclautchi’s needs are met.

Trivia[]

  • The Santaclautchi is the only mainline vintage Tamagotchi that features a perpetual character that can't die, only depart. It is one of two vintage Tamagotchi pets to have this, the other being the Doraemontchi, a licensed model.
  • Pressing the A and C buttons together shows a menu option to turn the sound on or off, instead of instantly switching between the two when pressed. This would become a standard feature from the Tamagotchi Connection onward, when the Tamagotchi brand relaunched in 2004.
