The Tamagotchi Uni (たまごっち ユニ) is a virtual pet released by Bandai Toys on July 15, 2023.
It is designed as a successor to the Tamagotchi Smart and the Tamagotchi Pix, and it is the first color-screen Tamagotchi device to have a simultaneous global release, specifically in 12 countries (USA, Mexico, Brazil, Korea, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland).
Design[]
The Uni is heavily based on the design of the Smart; it is the same size, smaller than previous color-screen devices, and comes with a watch strap to wear it on one's wrist like a watch. However, the clear frame around the Uni's screen is in a rippled, wavy pattern, and the watch strap is wavy accordingly.
It also returns to using physical buttons (as opposed to the Smart's touch screen and single home button, and the Pix's touch sensors). The buttons and back half of the shell body are both translucent. Like the Smart, it has a built-in pedometer. Unique to the Uni is built-in Wi-Fi connectivity provided through Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Features[]
Languages[]
On initial setup of the date, time, and user's name and birthday, the Uni will also prompt the user to select a language, with seven languages (English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese) all built-in.
UniTama[]
- Main article: Tamagotchi Uni/Personalities
Every Tamagotchi character regardless of species that's raised will develop a personality all its own; for example, it may be shy, energetic, chill, spoiled, or honest. These personalities can cause it to react differently in a variety of situations, including different idle animations, interacting with the user or with other Tamagotchi characters.
UniTamas will also have their own preference of favorite items, and can get better at using the items with repeated play; as well as preferences for their fashion and home furnishing. Personalities are determined at birth and remains for a Tamagotchi's entire life.
Upon setting up the device, the user will be asked to choose one of three eggs to hatch - blue, pink, or green - although they do not happen to have much, if any impact on evolution unlike with the Tamagotchi Pix. When a Tamagotchi gets married, they will leave behind an egg of the same color as theirs.
However, during every 5th generation, if the egg left behind was from a marriage from the Tamagotchi Party feature on Tamaverse, a rainbow egg will appear instead of the same usual color. This is a confirmation that one can get the special adults (Hypertchi or Bubbletchi) upon satisfying their evolution conditions. A 5th generation egg born between two Tamagotchi Units via Connect feature will result in not getting the special rainbow egg.

Tama Walk[]
Like the Smart, the Uni will count the user's daily steps when walking. With the Tama Walk feature accessed through the door icon, the Tamagotchi can visit a number of locations and take a 20-minute walk with the user, where they can meet other Tamagotchi and be rewarded with DIY crafting recipes and crafting materials. The Tamagotchi may decide to take a social media photo about the highlight of their walk, regardless of whether or not they're actually in it, and put some comments and tags at the bottom. While as many crafting materials as the user desires can be collected through multiple walking sessions, they can only acquire one recipe per day. The third location changes depending on the current season.
Walking Locations[]
- Tama Street
- Tama Park
- Flower Hills/Hills (Spring)
- Mermaid Palace/Sea (Summer)
- Patchi Forest/Forest (Autumn)
- North North Point/Snow Town (Winter)
Tama Farm[]
Hosted by Hatakemotchi and located under the Tama Walk menu, the Tamagotchi has 30 seconds to run around collecting as much fruit as they can. Tilting the Uni in any direction (left, right, forward, backward) will change the direction they go in. Each fruit corresponds to one of eleven dye colors, and every three pieces of a single type of fruit collected will award one bottle of its respective dye.
Tama Search[]
- Main article: Tamagotchi Uni/Tama Search characters
Similar to the Tamagotchi Pix's Explore function, Tama Search allows the Tamagotchi to go on a walk to meet NPCs. The option can be accessed by pressing the C button in the living room. The Tamagotchi will go out into town and keep walking until the Uni detects a wifi signal. All wifi signals detected in the area will be turned into an alphanumeric ID and the user can choose one in order to encounter character.
After the Tamagotchi meets a character, they will give them a sticker for their collection. Repeated encounters with the same character will increase their friendship level. Once the friendship level is maxed out, the character will invite the Tamagotchi to their room to play. Up to 100 characters can be encountered in the future, with updates gradually adding them in.
Items[]
- Main article: Tamagotchi Uni/Item list
While preferences with items still exist similar to prior releases and a Tamagotchi will refuse to play with toys they dislike, a Tamagotchi's preferences may rely on their personality rather than their species unlike before. In order to clean rooms when they get dirty, the Cleaning Robot must be selected from the items submenu rather than through the toilet icon.
The food and items available from delivery and the Tama Mall are determined by the current date of the device - including when they go on sale, rather than being completely randomised on a day to day basis for each device. When ordering food, up to three serves can be bought at once rather than needing to buy them one by one.
In addition to furniture, toys and some accessories can be used to decorate the rooms of the Tamagotchi's house or yard. The Tamagotchi can occasionally comment on some of their furnishings, take photos of new additions for social media, ask to play with the toy currently set out in the main room or bring a favorite toy to their bedroom - putting away a decoration that the Tamagotchi likes may upset them, as indicated through a thought bubble depicting the item. Leaving certain items outside may attract different kinds of Tama Pets that can then be adopted.
Items can be brought from the shop, obtained following a Tamaverse tour, suddenly appear as a random gift throughout the day or crafted with materials and recipes either on a Tamagotchi's own or with the help of a friend during connection. Certain items may be exclusive to different shells, or can only be obtained through DLC that comes with specific accessories.
Crafting[]
- Main article: Tamagotchi Uni/DIY list
After acquiring crafting recipes and materials from Tama Walk, the user can craft unique accessories for their Tamagotchi to wear using the craft function within the items menu. Two or three items and a chosen color dye can be combined, allowing for many accessories to come in up to eleven different colors. During connection, each user can choose one material to create matching accessories together regardless of recipes, and some can only be made this way.
Accessories can be worn from childhood onwards and come in four categories, most of which can be worn simultaneously for a multitude of combinations. If a Tamagotchi is neglected, they may laze about in the corner and toss their accessories all over the floor. Most accessories will also be taken off when the Tamagotchi goes to bed at night and then put back on once they wake up. The way the Tamagotchi puts their accessories depends on their personalities.
Games[]
The Uni features a total of 6 games, which can be accessed through the door icon and played once the Tamagotchi becomes a child. While two of them are available year-round, the other four can only be played during certain seasons.
Game Center[]
Hosted by Tamastetchi, these games will increase the character's happiness and reward Gotchi Points, which can be used to purchase items and furniture.
- Dancing: The user will be given a prompt by a Shirotama, showing what dance move they have to do with the Uni strapped to their wrist. They then have to follow the movement on the prompt to make the Tamagotchi dance correctly.
- Fast Food: The Tamagotchi will be serving burgers to six Shirotamas eating at a fast food restaurant. When a Shirotama puts their menu down and calls for the Tamagotchi, the player must move the cursor to their table and select it to serve them. The game ends when ten burgers are served.
- Egg Hunt (Spring): The user controls Usatchi as they walk around collecting easter eggs. They are moved up and down with the A and B buttons.
- Best Photo (Summer): The Tamagotchi is tasked with taking photos of a group of Shirotamas while fireworks fly in the background. A bar with a moving cursor is at the bottom and the player must stop the cursor when it reaches the red zone on the bar, speeding up with each round. The game ends after five rounds, with the quality of the photos determining the ranking.
- Matching (Autumn): Fruits and vegetables will be briefly shown before being covered with leaves. The user must remember what was shown and then find two matching fruits or vegetables to collect them, using the cursor to select.
- Snow Catch (Winter): The user controls Yukidamatchi with the A and B buttons as they collect snowflakes to grow into a big snowman. Touching a water drop will end the game.
Tama Pets[]
Similarly as to how they are obtained on the Tamagotchi On, a Tama Pet can visit if the player leaves certain toys or furniture out in the yard. Changing which item is placed outside may cause the current Tama Pet to vanish. The Tama Pet will also leave on its own after a few days.
Tamaverse[]
- Main article: Tamaverse
Using Wi-Fi, the Uni can connect to an online environment within the device called the Tamaverse. When the option is selected, the Tamagotchi will put on a VR headset to enter the Tamaverse, although some of the features are still accesible without internet access. They include:
- Entrance: At the entrance, the user's Tamagotchi can meet random user's Tamagotchi characters, who will greet them in their native language. There is also an option to send hearts to Tamagotchi characters the user likes and view hearts they have received from other users.
- Tama Square: Separated into three areas:
- Tama Party: The user's Tamagotchi can meet other users' Tamagotchi for a chance to marry them. Alternatively, they can choose from one of four Tamagotchi to go on a date with before offering to marry them.
- Tama Travel: Tourcontchi will take the user's Tamagotchi on a tour to an exotic location for 2000G. At the end of the tour, the Tamagotchi will bring back a souvenir.
- Tama Fashion: Outfits for Tamagotchi characters can be uploaded and tried on, while a variety of accessory sets can be purchased when offline.
- Tama Arena: Limited-time game events where the user's Tamagotchi must either work with or compete against other users' Tamagotchi in minigames to earn rewards.
- Download: The user can enter download codes to obtain exclusive gifts. See list of download codes here.
- Update: Version updates can be downloaded directly to the Tamagotchi device. If a Uni's firmware is outdated, it may not be able to access the online capabilities until it is updated.
- Info: Shows news, renew information, and earn special surprises.
Tama Portal[]
- Main article: Tama Portal
The Tama Portal is a location within the Tamaverse that allows the user to visit themed locations to access new content such as raisable characters, activity spots, minigames, food, items, and accessories, similar to the TamaSma Card from the Tamagotchi Smart. In order to have access to a location, an account must first be registered at the Tamaverse Ticket Shop and then a location ticket must be purchased. Once a ticket is bought, a download code will be sent to the the email used for registering the account along with directions for inputting the code in the Uni.
Only one area and its content can be loaded on the Tamagotchi Uni at a time. If the user obtains an adult exclusive to the content, its data cannot be removed until the next generation, or if the character runs away or dies.
Connectivity[]
Two Uni devices can natively connect to play games, exchange items, and craft exclusive accessories together. Two units can also marry each other with the "Propose" option; Shimashimatchi and Yattatchi can only be obtained through marrying two different devices.
Social Media posts[]
- Main article: Tamagotchi Uni/Social media
Every day at 7pm, a Tamagotchi at or above the child stage will upload a post about something they did onto social media and can be seen doing so with a tablet in the main room. Much like the profile screens, screenshots of these posts can be saved onto a phone through QR codes. Certain events may take priority over others, and the Tamagotchi will occasionally make a post without any image if they are neglected or if nothing noteworthy has happened since they last woke up.
Marriage and Moving Out[]
Unlike many previous Tamagotchi releases since the 2004 relaunch, the babies born after a wedding between two Unis can be of opposite genders and will come from the same color of egg as the parent originating from that device. Furthermore, they will be capable of evolving into Shimashimatchi or Yattatchi if they are a boy or girl respectively. Connection marriages tend to have shorter animations than ones done through the Tamaverse, with one Tamagotchi asking the other to move out together to their own house rather than explicitly asking for their hand in marriage. The device being proposed to will be given a yes/no prompt.
In addition to starting new generations the traditional way by getting married, an adult Tamagotchi will inform the user roughly four days after evolution that they feel ready to start life on their own so they can pursue their aspirations and request permission to move out. Several prompts will come up to double check if the user is alright with them leaving, and the Tamagotchi will ask again in a few days if told to stay. If they are allowed to move out, the user will be allowed to choose what color egg they want for the next generation.
The Uni does not track generations in the status menu, rather keeping record of the user's previous Tamagotchi in a separate section similar to what is done for Tamagotchi who have died. Like Tamagotchi Smart, only the the most recent 5 Tamagotchis will be shown, after which the oldest one will be deleted. If a new generation was started through marriage, there is a chance that the Tamagotchi will meet up with their parent when entering the Tamaverse and dance together, earning some Gotchi Points from the crowd. Tamagotchi born through a Tamaverse marriage will not only receive a region-based gift from their other parent upon becoming a child, but will also be capable of evolving into Hypertchi or Bubbletchi if they are of a generation that is a multiple of five. Starting from 1.6.0, any Tamagotchi matching those generational requirements will hatch out of a rainbow egg.
Accessories and Add-Ons[]
A few accessories have been released to customize the Tamagotchi Uni. Each accessory comes with a download code for an accessory or item that can be used in the Uni.
- Lanyards: Two lanyards (Unique Marble & Unique Black) were sold for for 9.99$. The lanyards feature base characters in the design and have a loop at the bottom to attach the Uni to using the charm hole. Tamagotchi Unis sold in Spain were bundled with the lanyards as a free gift.
- Watch Bands: Two watch bands in black and white were sold for 9.99$.

Trivia[]
- Information about the device was gradually leaked out since early 2023, leading up to its official reveal on June 6, 2023:
- It was first uncovered from regulatory fillings with the FCC in early March 2023, revealing that the device would have Wi-Fi functionality.
- The first images of the purple shell appeared on an Amazon UK listing that went live early in April 2023. Following the UK listing, several more would appear on other countries' Amazon storefronts before either being taken down or having the images removed.
- Due to this, Mimitchi was the first confirmed obtainable character due to appearing on the product listing image.
- An Italian Bandai catalog page revealed the pink shell design and several characters.
- One of the teasers of the device was uploaded a day early to the Bandai UK Instagram page before being taken down.
- A day before the product was officially revealed, a European page listing revealed the device's packaging.
- On May 27th, 2023, the Uni was first officially teased through a series of videos showing a Tamagotchi UFO flying across major global landmarks, turning them into digital Tamagotchi-like versions with various characters floating in the air. A longer-cut version of the teaser, with each landmark shown in succession, was uploaded to the Tamagotchi USA YouTube channel. Each video shows a silhouetted Uni device in the final shot, and pointed to the date of June 6, 2023, the day the Uni was officially revealed.
- Prototype units of the Uni were used as demos at the Tamagotchi Uni launch party in Madrid, Spain. Differences from the prototypes to the final model include:
- The Digital Friends of the World screen appearing at startup instead of the Tamagotchi Uni logo.
- The Tamagotchi Uni lettering on the faceplate being in a different font.
- The shell and watchband colors being a lighter pastel shade.
- The packaging having different character sprite and graphic placement. The Tamagotchi Uni lettering is also multicolored and in a different font, matching the lettering on the faceplate.
- The main menu screen having dark borders for the menu options.
- The Japanese packaging is similar to that of the Tamagotchi Smart, while the international packaging resembles the USA Tamagotchi On packaging.
- Packaging for the lanyards and wristbands are the same across all regions, even keeping the Japanese text descriptions. The only difference is the addition of a sticker containing distribution information in the region's language.
- The Tamagotchi Uni is the first for a few things:
- The first mainline color release to have a simultaneous global release.
- The first release to feature background music (featured in the Dance game and in many areas in Tamaverse) in lieu of beeps and short tunes as heard in previous versions, and speech sounds when Tamagotchi characters speak, similar to the speech effects used in the Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop series of games.
- The first release to utilize wi-fi as a way of connection.
- The first release to allow users to update their device's firmware directly.
- The first release to allow Tamagotchi to wear up to four accessories at the same time.
- The first color release to not take place in an explicitly described location. While previous releases take place in a specific town (Ex: Tamagotchi Plus Color in Tamagotchi Town), where the Tamagotchi lives is unknown. The official guidebook does not mention a location and the backgrounds used in the Uni when the Tamagotchi goes out are reused assets from Tamagotchi Town and My Town.
