The TinyTAN Tamagotchi is a licensed Tamagotchi Nano model. It is based on TinyTAN, animated characters based on BTS and created by Big Hit Entertainment. It was released in Japan and Korea on September 17th, 2022, and in the United States on October 2022.
Background[]
BTS is a seven-member South Korean boy band that debuted in 2013 and have since become a global sensation. In 2019, BTS launched "TinyTAN", a brand of small animated characters based on each of the bandmates. The characters use a magic door to go back and forth from their world to the real world. On the TinyTAN Tamagotchi, the magic door suddenly appears and the user is tasked with caring for the TinyTAN characters that visit.
Functions[]
Birth and Growth[]
After setting the clock, a scene will play of the Magic Door appearing from a smartphone. A TinyTAN character will eventually appear from the door, with the kind of character and time they arrive depending on quality of care and how much of the starting game was played. As the user continues good care, the character may change into different costumes from BTS music videos.
Buttons[]
There are no on-screen icons, and therefore all information is conveyed through the screen and buttons. The character is cared for by filling its meters; they have Hungry and Happy meters, each consisting of four units, which are both empty at the start. The Hungry meter decreases by one unit per hour, and the Happy meter decreases by one every 50 minutes. If either becomes empty, the character will call for attention to fill them.
The user can press the C button for an animation to see what it needs. A dizzy spiral signifies an empty Hungry meter, while a sulking lines signify an empty Happy meter. If both the Hungry and Happy meters are not empty, but the Happy meter is not full, the character will perform a happy animation. If the Happy meter is full and the Hungry meter is not empty, the character will perform a Close Up.
Pressing the A button opens the main menu, with the first option (a knife and fork) for the food menu, and the second option (a music note) for the games. The meal option fills one Hungry unit, and the character will refuse to eat anymore once the meter is full. The snack fills one Happy unit, and can be fed even when the Happy meter is full.
The A button is also used to open the lights on and off menu when the character has fallen asleep. The Magic Door does not sleep; the TinyTAN characters sleep at 8 PM until they are fully evolved, after which they sleep at 10 PM. All characters wake at 7 AM, and will turn the lights on themselves when they wake up.
Pressing A and C together will open the menu or turn on or off the sound. Pressing the B button will open the clock screen, and pressing A and C together will allow the user to set the time. These two functions are always available regardless of the character's circumstances, except when it has departed.
Games[]
There are three games, with the first one exclusive to the Magic Door stage. Games increase the Happy level; winning the game fills Happy by one unit, while a perfect game fills Happy by two.
- TinyTAN Character Catch (Magic Door exclusive): The user must catch letters falling from the top of the screen to spell out TinyTAN. A box in the upper right corner will indicate what letter to catch next.
- Dance! Dynamite: The character will be dancing and the user is prompted to press either the A or B button, once or twice. The game goes for five rounds. The user must successfully respond at least once to win the game, and five times for a perfect game.
- Egg Tart Making: The character will be making an egg tart. The user must press A when the filling fully fills the egg tart mold. The game goes for five rounds. The user must successfully respond at least once to win the game, and five times for a perfect game.
Daily Events[]
Throughout the day, the character will do an animation. Pressing any button while it's happening will either end it or trigger an additional animation.
Stress[]
Throughout the day, the character will become stressed, indicated by the character looking sad with a stress meter next to them. The user has to press the A button to cheer them up. The stress meter will gradually grow if the character is ignored. Stress cannot be reduced if the character is asleep, sick or about to depart.
Sickness[]
If the user fails to fill the Hungry and Happy meters, the character will become sick, depicted by them lying in bed with sulk lines. Pressing the A button twice will heal them. The character cannot be fed, played with or react to the C button until it is cheered up, and can't be treated when the character is asleep.
Departure[]
If the user severely neglects their character and fails to heal them when they become sick, they will depart through the Magic Door. Pressing A and C together will summon the Magic Door to allow the user to raise another character.
