The Toy Story Tamagotchi (「トイ・ストーリー」のたまごっち) is a licensed Tamagotchi Nano model based on Disney and Pixar's animated film series Toy Story. It was released in Japan on June 25th, 2022 and in the United States on July 13, 2022.
Background[]
Toy Story is an animated film based on the premise of children's toys coming to life when their owners are not around. The film follows the protagonists Woody, a cowboy doll, and Buzz Lightyear, a Space Ranger action figure, as they face a variety of adventures that take them outside of their house. Once outside they must reunite with their owner while keeping themselves and their group safe.
Toy Story is the first animated film to be entirely animated through CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery), and is credited for setting Pixar in stone as a household name. It would go on to inspire an immensely successful franchise consisting of 3 sequels, a spin-off television series and film starring Buzz Lightyear, several short films and television specials, and numerous pieces of merchandise, and is currently the 18th highest-grossing media franchise in the world, standing at $22 billion. Although Disney has distributed Toy Story media since the franchise's inception in 1995, it wasn't until 2006 when they would obtain ownership of the intellectual property through their acquisition of Pixar.
In the Toy Story Tamagotchi, the user can raise a variety of characters from the film series.
Functions[]
The user is tasked with caring for Woody, and can raise an additional 16 other possible characters (including two secret characters). There are three games and daily animations recreating scenes from the films. The user must regularly play with their character and keep them clean from dust as poor care will lead to the character getting sold at a yard sale.
Birth and Growth[]
After setting the clock, Andy will hand over Woody to Bonnie and the user will be tasked with caring for him. After 24 hours, Woody will evolve into a different toy depending on their quality of care and which games are played. The toy will stay for 24 hours before evolving into another toy, being explained by the manual as the toys taking turns being played with by the user.
Buttons[]
There are no on-screen icons, and therefore all information is conveyed through the screen and buttons. The character is cared for by filling its meters; they have Affection and Happy meters, each consisting of four units, which are both empty at the start. The Affection meter decreases by one unit per hour, and the Happy meter decreases by one every 50 minutes. If either becomes empty, the character will call for attention to fill them.
The user can press the C button for an animation to see what it needs. A dizzy spiral signifies an empty Affection meter, while a cross sign signify an empty Happy meter. If both the Affection and Happy meters are not empty, but the Happy meter is not full, the character will perform a happy animation. If the Happy meter is full and the Affection meter is not empty, the character will perform a Close Up.
Pressing the A button opens the main menu, with the first option for the interaction menu, and the second option for the games. The Touch! option has the user hold the toy which fills one Affection unit. The toy will refuse the option once the meter is full. The Play! option has the user play with the toy which fills one Happy unit. The toy can be continually played with even if the Happy meter is full.
The A button is also used to open the lights on and off menu when the toy has fallen asleep. Woody sleeps at 8 PM and wakes up at 7 AM and all other toys sleep at 10 PM and wake at 7 AM. They will turn the lights on themselves when they wake up.
Pressing A and C together will open the menu or turn on or off the sound. Pressing the B button will open the clock screen, and pressing A and C together will allow the user to set the time. These two functions are always available regardless of the character's circumstances, except when it has departed.
Games[]
There are three games, each influencing what toy Woody will evolve into. Games increase the Happy level; winning the game fills Happy by one unit, while a perfect game fills Happy by two.
- Jump! Duke Caboom: Duke Caboom will ride their motorcycle to perform a trick. The user has 10 seconds to rapidly press the A button to make his performance a success. If the button isn't pressed enough times, Duke will fall off his motorcycle.
- Fly! Green Soldiers: A green army man will float towards the ground in a parachute. The user must press the A or B button when they're aligned straight to have them land safely. Landing 5 green army men is a perfect game.
- Drive! RC: RC will be driving on the road past other cars. The user must press the A (down) and B (up) buttons to avoid the incoming cars. Passing by 5 cars is a perfect game.
Dust[]
Throughout the day, the toy will become covered in dust. Pressing the A button will clean the dust off them with a dust feather. If left too long, more dust will accumulate on the toy. When dust is on the screen, clearing it takes priority over all other functions; therefore, the toy cannot be fed, played with or react to the C button until the dust is cleared. Dust cannot be cleared when the character is asleep.
Upset[]
If the user fails to fill the Affection and Happy meters, or allows dust to accumulate on the screen, the toy will become upset, depicted by it looking sad and lines appearing at the top left corner of the screen. Pressing the A button twice will cheer it up. The character cannot be fed, played with or react to the C button until it is cheered up, and can't be treated when the character is asleep.
Daily Events[]
Throughout the day, animations from the film series will occur. Pressing the A button will take a closer look at the animation.

Departure[]

Trivia[]
- This marks the 5th Tamagotchi Nano to be themed after a Disney property, after the R2-D2 Tamagotchi, Twistetchi, Pocket Usapiyo, and Pocket Usatama. It also marks the 6th time overall Tamagotchi has collaborated with Disney, after the aforementioned Nanos and the Mickey Mouse-themed Tama Deco Pierce for the Tamagotchi P's.
- The Toy Story Tamagotchi's release date falls 8 days ahead of the United States release of the film Lightyear, a spin-off film in the Toy Story franchise that outlines the origins of the Space Ranger that the Buzz Lightyear action figure was modeled after. It was designed in promotion for the Japanese release of the same film, which falls 6 days ahead of the Toy Story Tamagotchi's own release date.
- Prior to the unveiling of the Toy Story Tamagotchi, My Tamagotchi Forever referenced Toy Story in the rocket picture on the fourth page of Mimitchi's photo album, where the caption said, "To Infinity and Beyond", the catchphrase of Buzz Lightyear.
- Even though the lineup for the Toy Story Tamagotchi consists of a robust number of characters that appeared in the film tetralogy, Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head are absent. This may be due to them being based on the Potato Head toyline from Hasbro, one of Bandai's chief competitors.
- The official Amazon (USA and Japan) pages are region-locked, preventing anyone outside the site's native country from ordering them. The reason for this is unknown. This marks the first time this has occurred on a Nano model not exclusive to Premium-Bandai.
