Unidentified Gag Life-forms: Tamagotchi

Unidentified Gag Life-forms: Tamagotchi (未確認ギャグ生命体たまごっち Mikakunin Gyaggu Seimeitai Tamagocchi) is a manga that was made by Fumihito Tatekawa. It was published in March 2006 by CoroCoro Comics, under the Shogakukan company. Only one volume was made, with 20 chapters inside. Each chapter has multiple small segments.

In between chapters are strips of the author's Tamagotchi diary, which are 4-panel comics about the author's experience raising Tamagotchis.

Story

The manga is vastly different in tone and canon from other Tamagotchi media. Tamagotchi Planet is inexplicably inhabited by humanoid beings, with some being more like humans and others being more like yokai. The Tamagotchis are very rude towards each other for comedic purposes, and sometimes exhibit random powers and transformations. The character with the most focus is Oyajitchi, who often bothers other characters or is on the receiving end of bad situations. The overall tone is surreal, with exaggerated face expressions and an unconventional style. A lot of the humor is slapstick or shock humor, including "gross-out" gags showcasing blood, death, and absurdist scenarios.

Chapters

1. Tamagotchi Entrance!!

Mametchi and Kuchipatchi - In this story, Mametchi introduces himself as the smartest Tamagotchi on Tamagotchi Planet. He then introduces Kuchipatchi, mockingly saying that Kuchipatchi is very different from himself, calling him laid-back and slow to react. Mametchi tells Kuchipatchi he is only kidding and asks if he is mad, but Kuchipatchi does not respond. Mametchi gets annoyed about being ignored and heads home to have dinner, take a bath, and go to sleep. Finally, when he is in bed, Kuchipatchi suddenly appears in his window furious about Mametchi's teasing. Mametchi is shocked at just how slow to react Kuchipatchi was.

Mametchi's Invention - This time Memetchi is the one remarking on Kuchipatchi's slowness. She says slow people are not her type, and Kuchipatchi tearfully tells Mametchi what she said to him. Mametchi comforts him and comes up with the idea to make a fast-running machine for him. As before, Kuchipatchi is slow to react, but five hours later he finally pops in Mametchi's window to say he really wants the invention. The next day, Memetchi is walking down the street when she hears Kuchipatchi calling her name. She screams when she sees Kuchipatchi with a big pair of humanoid legs attached to him to help him run faster, and Kuchipatchi asks if she likes his new appearance. Later, Mametchi cheerfully asks Kuchipatchi if Memetchi likes him now, but Kuchipatchi is angry and crying. Demanding how he could possibly be liked with the giant robot legs, he uses them to kick Mametchi in the face.

Children Full of Dreams!! - Mametchi, Kuchipatchi, and Gozarutchi are watching two Tamagotchi eggs hatch. Petitchi and Shiropetitchi jump out, and Mametchi asks what their dreams are for the future. They both want to grow up quickly so they can become good Tamagotchi adults. Suddenly, Oyajitchi shows up singing while drinking a bottle of sake. Noting that he drank too much, Oyajitchi vomits on the ground and starts asking everybody if they laughed at him and insists they should give him money if they laughed. Petitchi and Shiropetitchi cower in the corner and cry, deciding that they don't want to become adults after all. Mametchi scolds Oyajitchi for destroying children's dreams, and Oyajitchi apologizes while Gozarutchi rapidly tosses shuriken at him.

2. Ferocious Attack on Memetchi!!

Popular Memetchi - Memetchi introduces herself as Tamagotchi Planet's idol, being cute and popular. Kuchipatchi and Gozarutchi give her love letters and she thanks them, and then Oyajitchi tells her to read what he has too. Memetchi is uncertain about getting a love letter from Oyajitchi, but he places a thick stack of paper in her hands. He proclaims he stayed up all night making 100 of them. Memetchi blushes, flustered and surprised by how passionate Oyajitchi is about love. However, when she tries to read them, she is aghast to find it is a 100-page one-shot manga Oyajitchi made about himself. Then Gozarutchi and Kuchipatchi both beg her to go out with them, but she cannot decide. Gozarutchi gets mad and traps Memetchi by tying her in rope, declaring that he and Kuchipatchi with have a showdown. Gozarutchi claims that whoever can save Memetchi by untying her will get to go out with her. As a pun on the Japanese word for "showdown" sounding similar to the words for "sea bream" and "buttocks", Oyajitchi appears hauling a giant sea bream with prominent buttocks.

Save Memetchi!! - Kuchipatchi and Gozarutchi begin their showdown to save Memetchi. Kuchipatchi goes first, but the rope is too tight for him to undo. Kuchipatchi gets the idea to change into "Kuchipatchiman", a transformation that will make him incredibly strong. However, it takes him seven hours to change into the outfit. When night falls and he still isn't done, Memetchi gets frustrated with him and tells him to untie the rope properly. He still can't do it, but he says he will use his "Kuchipatchi beam" to burn the rope. He starts to prepare the powerful beam, but it takes seven hours to launch as well, and he ends up falling asleep.

When it is Gozarutchi's turn, he notes that he cannot untie the rope alone and uses his shadow clone technique to make clones of himself. However, one of the clones is a strange humanoid being. Memetchi tells Gozarutchi to just untie the rope properly, but he still can't do it alone, and so he uses his shadow clone technique again. Memetchi is hopeful that it worked out, but this time, every single one of the clones is a strange being.

Oyajitchi says he will save Memetchi in a flash. He starts drinking sake, as supposedly, drinking alcohol makes him stronger and more handsome. Memetchi waits for him to save her, but he ends up getting too drunk to care about it anymore. Memetchi disqualifies him and Oyajitchi insists he tried his best, attempting to win her over. Gozarutchi punches Oyajitchi away. Gozarutchi and Kuchipatchi then ask Memetchi who she decided to go out with. In the end, she liked one of the humanoid shadow clones the most, because it untied her while the Tamagotchi boys didn't notice. Kuchipatchi, Gozarutchi, and Oyajitchi are all dismayed.

Trivia

• Ojitchi and Otokitchi feature in the stories as Oyajitchi's parents, making this manga one of the few pieces of media outside of the virtual pets to showcase the fact they're a family.
